The one stop shop for agency social care professionals
Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I choose the right agency for me?

A. Consider what you hope to gain from agency working. For example, if you are looking to build experience in a chosen field, you may wish to look at which agencies offer dedicated placement support and training opportunities – see agency directory for a comparison of agency benefits. Alternatively, you may be an experienced practitioner and require a range of suitable assignments to choose from – see jobs page for current agency posts.

Q. What is the difference between PAYE, self employed and limited company status?

A. PAYE means you become an employee (even if only for a limited period) of either the agency or the organisation you are working in and tax and NIC will be deducted at source. Depending on your earnings, you may need to fill in a tax return at the end of the year. If you are self employed or do it through a limited company, you are treated as “being in the business” of providing freelance social care and will need to keep accounts and pay the tax (ie it is not deducted from the amount you earn). You may not be given a choice, but there are pros and cons of both depending on your personal circumstances, so you probably need to get professional advice from an accountant that is experienced in dealing with contractors.

Q. Will I need an enhanced CRB check ?

A. Yes. Most Social Care Recruitment Agencies will cover the cost of this.

Q. Will I need to be registered with the GSCC (General Social Care Council)?

A. All qualified Social Workers have to be registered with the GSCC. Most Social Care Recruitment Agencies will cover the cost of the annual registration fee. There are plans to register other groups of social care workers in the near future. Go to the GSCC website for updated information.

Q. What placement support can I expect from my agency?

A. Some agencies provide a dedicated placement support service. See agency directory for agencies providing this service. Other agencies provide support via your individual consultant.

Q. What pay rate can I expect?

A. For unqualified posts expect to earn from £6.00 per hour. For qualified positions you can expect an average hourly rate of £17 - £24. Although, this varies between agencies, posts and level of experience required for the post. Senior and management positions can range from £20 per hour upwards. See jobs page for agencies current posts.

Q. What training can I expect?

A. Some agencies offer access to training themselves. Other agencies may contribute towards training costs. See agency directory to compare training opportunities offered. This is an important question to ask your agency, as you will need to demonstrate continued professional development to the GSCC. Go to the GSCC website for guidance on training requirements.
